MI Dream Home: $7.2M Baldwin fishing ranch on Pere Marquette River is 'finest trout camp east of the Mississippi'

Mar. 6—This could be a real catch for some home buyer: an Adirondacks-style lodge that comes with seven miles of river that's famous for trout fishing.

The 1929-built lodge sits on 685 acres of land located at 6378 South Mack Road in Baldwin. Nearly seven miles of the Pere Marquette River runs through the property, known as the Cannon River Ranch. The land is also surrounded by federal forests.

The two-story fishing lodge and its property are on the market for $7.2 million. Dick Huey, the owner of Dick Huey Real Estate in Traverse City and the Realtor who listed the property for sale, said the land is also available for a split for $3.5 million.

The lodge is a classic that can't be reproduced by newer construction, he said.

The main room is two stories tall and has a fieldstone fireplace. The lodge has six bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two half baths, according to the ranch. It also has an enclosed porch outside that faces the river.

The property also has a barn, a tackle house and a caretaker's house.

There are also four cabins that were built in the 1980s along the river. Each cabin has a fireplace and a deck that offers a view of the river.

A family that owned a furniture making company originally built the ranch, which is constructed from white ash and wormy chestnut. A west Michigan businessman, George W. Cannon Sr., bought the property in the 1950s and the ranch is named for him and his family. Cannon owned one of the biggest iron foundries in the country at that time, according to news reports. Tax records show the property is now owned by the G.W. Cannon Co.

Huey said the ranch is the finest trout camp east of the Mississippi and anglers can reel in rainbow trout, German brown trout, steelhead trout and King salmon from the river. But the river is also great for kayaking and canoeing, he said.

Not only that, the property is perfect for hunting, hiking and snowshoes, cross-country skiing and snowmobiles, according to Huey.
