MHSAA splitting up late-season football schedule due to shortage of officials

Sep. 27—The final two weeks of the high school football regular season will see a bunch of Thursday night games.

Last Friday, the Mississippi High School Activities Association approved a plan to split the schedule in an effort to address a shortage of game officials.

MHSAA Executive Director Rickey Neaves said in a video posted Monday that teams in Classes 2A, 3A and 4A will wrap up their regular seasons on Thursday, Oct. 28, while 1A, 5A and 6A games will remain scheduled for that Friday.

The next week, 1A, 5A and 6A teams will play their final regular season games on Thursday, Nov. 4. The playoffs will begin for 2A, 3A and 4A that Friday.

"This is a change that we feel like we have to make," Neaves said. "I think it's a good plan, and it may be even a plan that we should consider next year, or every year, to ensure that we can get the best officials as possible for our year-ending games and for all of our playoff games."

Teams in 1A, 5A and 6A will open their playoffs on Friday, Nov. 12.
