New Mexican restaurant opens in downtown Port Huron Thursday

Señor Tequila Mexican Restaurant opened in downtown Port Huron Thursday, filling a space that has sat empty for more than two years.

Located in the former Martina's Grill location at 321 Huron Ave., the restaurant is owned and operated by two brothers, Andres and Juan Perez. The restaurant draws on the brothers' Mexican heritage by serving authentic dishes, such as street tacos, wet burritos and poblano stuffed peppers.

While Andres Perez said they originally planned to open in August, they wanted to wait to open until they received their liquor license.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Andres Perez said business had been steady for their first day, and he had gotten a lot of positive feedback. Patrons filled about half the booths around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, diving into dishes and drinking brightly-colored margaritas.

"It makes me feel special, seeing a lot of people I know from town," he said.

Ryan Bostwick and Sarah Brennan, both realtors in Port Huron, stopped by the new restaurant for their lunch break. They said they are excited to have a different dining option in the area.

"The food was incredible," Bostwick said.

Andres Perez said the restaurant is in need of staff for all positions, including hosts, servers, bartenders and bussers. Those interested in working at the restaurant should stop by and inquire about open positions, call (810) 432-8838 or visit their Facebook page at Señor Tequila Mexican Restaurant.

More on the brothers

The brothers also own and operate Jose's Mexican restaurant in Sault Ste. Marie, and found Port Huron when they were looking for a location for a second restaurant.

The brothers emigrated to Atlanta, Georgia from Guadalajara, Mexico with their family in search of a better life when they were kids. They got their start in the restaurant business with their father, who owned and operated Mexican restaurants in Atlanta while they were growing up.

Andre Perez said he followed his uncle to Michigan, who operates a Mexican restaurant in Marquette. He said he has worked in restaurants all his life, going from managing restaurants to opening Jose's and now Señor Tequila.
