Metuchen's first bike lane project planned for Grove Avenue

METUCHEN - Construction is scheduled to begin this summer on a bicycle lane along the borough's portion of Grove Avenue.

But before the design phase is completed in late spring, a public meeting will be held for residents and business owners to provide input on the project.

The Transportation Alternatives Design Assistance TA 2018 Grove Avenue and Eggert Avenue Bicycle Lanes Final Design Phase Public Information Center will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Metuchen Senior Citizen Center, 15 Center St. The snow date is Feb. 9.

The public will have an opportunity to review drawings, ask questions and discuss any issues.

Plans call for the installation of bicycle-use enhancements including signed and striped bicycle lanes, possible color pavement for dedicated bicycle lanes along each side of the roadway, or shared lane markings in the area of dedicated turn lanes along the roadway.

The work is planned along Eggert Avenue off Amboy Avenue. Eggert Avenue becomes Grove Avenue after Woodbridge Avenue. The Metuchen portion of Grove Avenue ends a little past Metuchen High School at the Edison border.

In the areas with available space, the proposed improvements will include 11-foot travel lanes and 5-foot bicycle lanes, including color pavement treatment. Because of the existing width of Eggert Avenue, bicycles will be required to share the travel lanes with vehicular traffic. As a result, shared lane markings are proposed.

Mayor Jonathan Busch mentioned the borough's first bicycle lane project as part of his State of the Borough address earlier this month.

The anticipated project scheduled calls for design work to be completed in the late spring and construction in the summer.

Anyone unable to participate in the public meeting or who wants to provide comments after the meeting is encouraged to visit the borough's website for information about the project and provide comments by February 23, 2023 at http://www.metuchennj.org/metnj/ PROJECT BACKGROUND
