Memorial Day: Remembering Chittenden County residents who died or were missing in war

Memorial Day — or Decoration Day, as it was originally known — has been observed annually in May since the late 1860s after the U.S. Civil War.

Then and now, it is a day to remember American soldiers who died during service, both in peacetime and in wars.

In honor of Memorial Day, the Burlington Free Press has worked to track down and publish the names of Chittenden County residents who died in each war since World War I. The lists also include residents who were missing in action.

The names were collected from multiple sources, including newspaper clippings, the U.S. National Archives, the U.S. Department of Defense's Casualty Analysis System, Naval-History.net, and the 1920s book "The Soldiers of the Great War, Vol. 3." Since there was no central source for every casualty in every war, some of the lists may not be exhaustive, but they are as complete as possible given the sources available.

Names are sorted by war and, when possible, include the person's hometown, rank and branch of the military.
