Memorial Day 2022: Your guide to parades, services in Monroe County

Several parades and special events will take place today and Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

Erie:

The annual Community Memorial Day services held by members of Erie Post 3925, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and its auxiliary will be held at noon Monday at St. Joseph Cemetery in Erie.

Members and citizens from the community will hold traditional commemorative rites at the grave of Joseph Dusseau in the cemetery, located at Erie and Cemetery Rds. Parking will be along both streets. Services will be led by Tom Sancrant, post commander; Terry Rollins, senior vice commander, and Dan Dusseau, new president of the auxiliary. Joseph Dusseau is the grandfather of the auxiliary president

Following the short service, there will be a cookout and potluck dinner at the post home, 1944 Erie Rd. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided. Visitors are asked to bring a dish to pass.

Names of children, ages 7-12, may be entered in a drawing to spend a free week this summer at Camp Trotter. The drawing of a winner will take place during the dinner. Further information is available by contacting Marji Terry, the new secretary and past president of the auxiliary.

Carleton:

  • Traci Hopper, an Airport High School teacher and past Veterans of Foreign War State Teacher of the Year, will be the guest speaker at the annual Memorial Day service in the Carleton Cemetery Monday.

The service is organized by Carleton Post 4093, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The ceremony will start about 10:15 a.m. Monday after veterans and their organizations step-off at 10 from the center of the village off Monroe St. near Tiffany’s Pizza. The Airport High School Marching Band, Carleton Police and a color guard from the post will lead the procession that will wind its way through the village for about a half-mile to the cemetery for solemn commemorative rites at the grave of a post member.

Patrick Champa, post commander, will be master of ceremonies and also lead the rites of placing floral tributes at the grave.

Members of Cub Scout Pack 522 and Boy Scout Troop 566 also will take part in the events.

Afterward, participants are invited to the post home on Carleton-Rockwood Rd. at I-275 for hot dogs, chips and refreshments.

Monroe:

The Monroe Post 1138, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will host a parade through downtown Monroe at 2 p.m. Monday.

The route will begin on S. Monroe St. and end at St. Mary’s Park. A ceremony on the Monroe St. bridge will honor those who died at sea.

The Monroe Post 1138, VFW also is hosting several services on Monday.

A sunrise memorial ceremony will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Heck Park/Vietnam Memorial Park. A memorial service will begin at 9 a.m. at Monroe Post 1138, VFW hall.

The post’s Ritual Team will split up and conduct services at several cemeteries and other locations. Services will begin at 9:30 a.m. at St. Marys/Old Burial Ground, Kentucky Cemetery and Woodlawn Cemetery.

A service will begin at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Memorial Park. A service will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Veterans Park.

Maybee:

A Memorial Day service will take place at 10 this morning at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maybee, 7771 High St.

Feature will be patriotic music followed by Taps and a sermon preached by the new minister, Chaplain James Puhl. Minister Puhl is a retired Purple Heart recipient of the Vietnam War. The public, especially veterans and their families, are encouraged to attend.

Flat Rock:

A Memorial Day Parade will take place Monday in Flat Rock.

The event, hosted by the Flat Rock American Legion Post, will begin at 10 a.m. at the post home, 28614 Division St. The parade will proceed along Gibraltar Rd. to the Veterans Memorial at Flat Rock City Hall, Gibraltar Rd. at Evergreen St.

Children are encouraged to decorate their bicycles and ride in the parade.

LaSalle:

A service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at LaSalle Cemetery.

Dundee:

The Dundee Veterans Memorial Observance will take place Monday in Dundee.

The Dundee Veterans Corporation will hold its annual observance at 10 a.m. at Wolverine Park, located behind the old Mill Museum.

The parade will form at the Dundee High School parking lot and proceed to Wolverine Park via Barnum St. Those participating should be at the school at 9:30 a.m. The parade will step-off at 9:45 a.m.

The Dundee High School Marching Band and the DHS Choir will be part of the ceremony.

The speaker is Sgt. Keith Kamphuis, who joined the Navy in 2005 as a corpsman.

After the ceremony the Veterans Honor Guard will go to Oak Grove, Maple Grove, Leib and Azalia Cemeteries to conduct services.

The Veterans Club will hold an open house at the Veterans Hall at 1 p.m. Festivities will begin with a tribute to POWs and MIAs.
