Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp call off their engagement 8 years after romance began

Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp have reportedly called it quits, ending their engagement and relationship after 8 years of an on-and-off romance.

"She’d had enough and ended [their engagement]." an insider told Us Weekly. "She has no regrets."

The news comes nearly a year after Mellencamp, 68, popped the question in November 2018. Ryan, 57, was elated at the time, posting a hand-drawn illustration of the couple on Instagram and captioning it "ENGAGED!"

A month later, during an interview on the "Today" show, Mellencamp was asked what motivated him to propose.

"One can only imagine I'm probably not the easiest guy to get along with," Mellencamp replied. "So let's leave it at that."

Mellencamp's made similar remarks before, once telling Howard Stern that "women hate" him: "I think it's because I'm a child. I throw fits, I gripe, I complain. I'm moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that's me."

At the time, he and Ryan had broken up, and he added, "I loved Meg Ryan. She hates me to death."

As recently as mid-summer, the wedding was still on, although Ryan told InStyle that she wasn't in a rush to walk down the aisle: "Yes, I’m going to get married at some point," she said. "But for now this engagement thing is a state of grace."

Ryan and Mellencamp began dating in 2011 and split in 2014. They reconciled later that year, then broke up again in 2015 and started things up again in 2017.

"What’s great about now is that John and I are so free to have fun," Ryan told the New York Times in February 2018. "Maybe that freedom is about being a million years old. But I sometimes think relationships are for aliens. Who does it? Who can do it? I don’t know how any of us ever do."
