McCook Central/Montrose's Jackson Remmers wins first state title as freshman

Feb. 28—RAPID CITY — There's a simplicity to Jackson Remmers' mindset that works.

"Always working hard and always trying to score points," he said.

The McCook Central/Montrose freshman scored enough points on Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The No. 2 seed claimed the 138-pound state championship over Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington's Joey Hoverson, 9-3.

It comes after taking fourth place at 126 pounds last season, giving him a sigh of relief when the clock ran out.

"It felt really good," Remmers said. "... Just been working all season for it and it finally happened."

Remmers, who already has 133 wins in his varsity career, notched a first-period takedown to take a 2-0 lead, and never looked back. He added two more takedowns in the second period, and then an escape and takedown to cap his victory in the final period. He finished the year 35-3.

Last season's finish motivated him for a higher finish this year. He set lofty expectations on himself to become a state champion. And now that he's on top of the podium, he doesn't plan on relinquishing his spot.

"Win three more," Remmers said about goals for his final three seasons.
