MC Jin, Wyclef Jean Call For an End to Violence in 'Stop the Hatred' Music Video

MC Jin and Wyclef Jean partnered with TAAF and Lisa Ling to create a powerful music video about the recent attacks in the AAPI community.

About the video: "Stop the Hatred," released on May 12, is an anthem that seeks to end violence against the AAPI community.

  • MC Jin is the first Asian American solo rapper to sign with a major record label, stating in his Youtube description he wanted to use his artistry to express some of his own "sentiments" as well as "raise awareness to these issues."

  • In an Instagram post, the rapper wrote he hoped the song could be an "example" that "solidarity can exist and be powerful during these times."

  • The song's title was inspired by Jin's 8-year-old son who shouted, "stop the hatred," into a crowd of thousands at a #StopAsianHate rally on March 21 in New York City.



Background: Wyclef Jean was one of Jin's childhood idols and previously collaborated on Jin's first single in November 2014 titled, "Learn Chinese".

  • The collaboration "symbolizes the importance of solidarity amongst all communities during these dark times," Jin said.

  • Jean said he is proud to work with Jin to "build bridges for our communities through music" and that it is necessary to "be active in our fight to stop the hatred," according to a press release.


Who's involved: The music video was created in partnership with TAAF and features a voiceover from Lisa Ling.

  • "The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) provides funding and resources to build the infrastructure to improve AAPI advocacy, power, and representation," according to its mission page.

  • The video was directed by Bao Nguyen and produced by Tiffany Chan.

  • Ling described the music video as "special" and "the anthem of the moment" in an Instagram comment on Jin's post.

  • Jin's son Chance also appears in the music video.
