McFly divide fans with comeback announcement

McFly have announced they will release their first album in nine years - and play a one-off show to celebrate.

Tom Fletcher, 34, Danny Jones, 33, Dougie Poynter, 31, and Harry Judd, 33, last toured together in September 2016 but have not released an album since 2010’s Above The Noise.

They will perform at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday November 20th and tickets will go on sale this Friday, September 13th.

After teasing fans on social media with a clip of a blinking microphone the All About You singers announced their comeback live on Instagram.

They also confirmed the release of new material in studio album McFly: The Lost Songs.

The unheard tracks originally intended for their unreleased sixth album will be released every week in the run up to the concert accross all streaming platforms.

Fletcher said of getting back together once again: “It just feels like this us and me. This is what I’m destined to do - is be in this band FOREVER!”

McFly - who are named after the character Marty McFly from the Back To The Future movies - were delighted when Christopher Lloyd, who plays Doc Brown in the films, tweeted his reaction to seeing them trending.

But the announcement disappointed some fans who were upset that the former boyband will be playing just one show, and not embarking on a tour outside the UK.

One wrote: “So, the thing about Mcfly was a one gig thing??? Dissappointed but not surprised.”

While anothe fan tweeted: “One singular gig on a Wednesday which is impossible for most to go. Gutted tbh #mcfly [sic]”

McFly released their debut single 5 Colours in Her Hair in 2004, charting at Number One in the UK. Other hits include Obviously, All About You and Baby’s Coming Back. They released a Greatest Hits album in 2007 and a second in 2013 titled Memory Lane... Best Of McFly.

Over the years the boys have pursued solo projects with Judd winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2011 and Dougie Poynter crowned King of the Jungle on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! the same year.

In 2014 joined forces with Busted’s James Bourne and Matt Willis and went on tour as supergroup McBusted.

Then in September 2016 McFly went on a ‘mini’ tour in the UK, after which they announced they were scrapping two albums worth of new material as they “wouldn't be 100 per cent behind it any more” and went on an indefinite hiatus.
