ST. CLOUD ― Mayor Dave Kleis announced Thursday St. Cloud Police Commander Brett Mushatt will be appointed as the new Assistant Chief of Police.

In August, Police Chief W. Blair Anderson announced he would be retiring at the end of November and would be replaced by current Assistant Chief of Police Jeff Oxton.

Mushatt grew up on the southeast side of St. Cloud and graduated from Tech High School before he attended St. John's University and graduated with a degree in social work, according to a press release. He then earned a graduate degree in Public Safety Leadership from St. Cloud State University. Mushatt has also completed training with the FBI National Academy.

Mushatt joined the St. Cloud Police Department in 2002 where he served as a patrol officer and school resource officer. Throughout his career in the department he has served in multiple supervisory ranks including as a sergeant, a lieutenant and as current commander of operations.

"Commander Mushatt has been instrumental in implementing the St. Cloud Police Department's wellness initiatives and is a strong advocate for youth programming and community engagement," Kleis said in a statement. "We are excited that the new chief and assistant chief both were raised in St. Cloud, graduated from Apollo and Tech High Schools, are alumni of St. Cloud State and both went on to serve their local community as members of the St. Cloud Police Department."

The positions will become official when Anderson retires on Nov. 30.
