Mayor Adams makes another push for federal prosecutors on gun cases involving convicted felons

Mayor Adams redoubled his push on Tuesday to have federal prosecutors take on gun cases involving convicted felons after an ex-con was arrested for fatally shooting two people and wounding a 96-year-old man.

In doing so, Adams endorsed a plan promoted by ex-NYPD detective Bo Dietl, a former Republican mayoral candidate who ran an objectively troubled campaign for that office in 2017.

Adams spoke Tuesday morning on WABC radio less than two hours after Sundance Oliver, 28, was taken into custody for a two-borough shooting rampage that began Monday morning.

“I think Bo is right in line with the role we can play,” the mayor said in response to a question about Dietl’s support of more federal involvement in gun cases.

“Knowing that you’re facing federal charges really plays out well on the streets,” Adams said. “People are really concerned when the federal government gets involved.”

Adams called for more federal involvement in gun cases early on in his administration, a stance that drew criticism from those who think such a measure would adversely impact Blacks and Latinos.

But Adams, the second Black mayor in New York City’s history, clearly hasn’t wavered in his support of the idea — and he suggested that Oliver is a “poster child” for his stance.

“We were up to about 3 am trying to locate him before he carried out another homicide,” Adams said. “He is the poster child of just a failing system of keeping dangerous people off our streets no matter how many times police officers carry out their job.”

He added that his administration met with federal prosecutors earlier this year and that he will “continue to ask them to be a partner — particularly in those cases where you know individuals are just repeated offenders.”

“That’s what we want to narrow in on,” he said.
