Mayfield wins sixth round at National Finals Rodeo

Dec. 7—LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Clovis roper Shad Mayfield tied a Thomas and Mack Arena record Tuesday night, winning the sixth round of the tie-down roping competition at the National Finals Rodeo.

Mayfield's time of 6.5 seconds was .1 faster than runner-up Jontavian Douch and 1.0 seconds faster than standings leader Caleb Smidt, who finished third on Tuesday.

Mayfield now shares the arena mark with Cody Ohl and Trevor Brazile, Montanasports.com reported.

The win earned Mayfield $28,913, moving his season total to $265,272.

Smidt earned $17,255 for his third-place finish in round six. Smidt leads Mayfield, who is in second place, by $11,064 going into Wednesday's seventh round.

Smidt came into the NFR in fourth place, but moved atop the leader board with six consecutive top-four finishes. Mayfield came into the NFR in first place. Tuesday's win marked just his second time to finish in the money and first time to finish ahead of Smidt, a three-time world champion, in the 2022 National Finals.

Mayfield won the NFR's tie-down title in 2020.

The NFR is scheduled to wrap up a 10-night performance on Saturday.
