Maxwell Jenkins says he’s a ‘normal kid’ despite being a child star

Maxwell Jenkins, star of Netflix’s reboot of “Lost in Space,” jokes that he was “kind of born into the circus” because the 15-year-old has been performing since he was 4 years old.

“I wouldn’t the person I am today if the circus wasn’t in my life,” Jenkins told In The Know.

Jenkins transitioned into TV acting in 2013 for an ABC drama called “Betrayal” and caught the acting bug immediately. He credits background in circus performing for his immediate fearlessness and comfort around working with adult actors in front of a camera. The pilot episode was directed by Patty Jenkins (no relation), who would be the first of many impressive directors Jenkins would get to work with over the coming years.

He’s shared the screen with Mark Wahlberg, Connie Britton and Gerard Butler, to name a few, and now is the lead in his second Netflix series.

“There was a script on my mom’s dresser, or desk or something, and I picked it up and started flipping through it and was like, ‘”Lost in Space,” that sounds cool,'” Jenkins said. “I was like, ‘Mom we always talk about jobs that enhance my childhood and things that I’m really passionate about doing — this is something I really want to do.'”

To be so young and star in a Netflix series that just got renewed for a second season seems almost unfathomable and overwhelming. But Jenkins certainly doesn’t feel like a celebrity.

“Playing music, being in a circus and having dogs at home and going to public school and, it’s all just helped me be a normal kid,” he explained.
