Maumee electrician announces candidacy for city council

May 17—A Maumee electrician who grew up in the city has announced his candidacy for one of Maumee's at-large city council seats for the coming election in November.

Jon Fiscus, 39, was born in Philadelphia and moved to Maumee just a year later. He graduated from Maumee High School in 2000, and — for the past 11 years — has lived in the city with his wife, Allison. They have three children.

Two years ago, Mr. Fiscus ran for council. This year, he is running as an independent candidate.

"I've always wanted to give back," Mr. Fiscus said.

He has worked with the Maumee High School band program as a drumline instructor and spends time with his family in the city's parks. He also serves as a member of the Maumee Indoor Theater Advisory Board, Charter Review Advisory Commission, and Building Standards & Appeals Board.

Mr. Fiscus said his goals as a councilman include improving the communication between the city and residents, emphasizing transparency within the city, and improving the city's local parks.

He would like to work on giving residents more opportunities to connect with the city, such as through increasing digital modes of communication.

"It was especially rough last year with COVID-19 and not being able to go to council meetings," he said.

Mr. Fiscus attended Bowling Green State University and Owens Community College and pursued a career as an electrician. He now works as a journeyman electrician for a small local company.

Earlier this year, Margo Puffenberger, a Democrat, also announced her candidacy for Maumee City Council.

Maumee council seats that are up for re-election are those of Brent Buehrer, Tracey Elmore, Timothy Pauken, and Thomas Wagener, Jr.
