Matthew McConaughey calls California his "second home," and now the actor is giving back when the state needs it most.

McConaughey, originally from Texas, recently helped prepare 1,600 turkey dinners for Californians affected by the devastating wildfires that have cost billions of dollars in damage and left thousands without a home.

The heartwarming move, done in cooperation with Operation BBQ Relief and Wild Turkey Bourbon, saw the 50-year-old prepping, slicing and delivering meals for hundreds of first responders and homeless shelters.

"Being able to provide meals to the men and women who put themselves on the line is an honor for me," McConaughey said in a press release. "We are grateful to be here today to say thank you, shine a light on their unwavering conviction, and hopefully inspire others to get involved and help in their own communities."

McConaughey said the campaign, which began earlier this month, was planned long before wildfires broke out across the state. It's not the first time the actor has lent his cooking skills to charity either: In 2017, the actor helped Wild Turkey deliver more than 4,500 meals to residents in Lawrenceburg, Ky., where the company was founded.

He also helped the company donate food to victims of Hurricane Harvey, which devastated parts of McConaughey's home state of Texas in 2017. McConaughey has worked with Wild Turkey as its creative director since 2016.

The charitable turkey-slicing was just the latest viral moment for McConaughey this year. The actor made waves when he joined Instagram last week, with his account garnering more than 1.5 million followers in just a handful of days.

McConaughey also made headlines in August, when he officially became a film professor at the University of Texas, his alma mater. The avid Texas football fan recently posted a photo of him enjoying a Longhorns victory with Jimmy Fallon.
