Matthew Mayer to withdraw from NBA draft, transfer from Baylor
Former Baylor forward Matthew Mayer told Adam Zagoria of Zags Blog that he will withdraw from the 2022 NBA draft and transfer to a different program for next season.
Mayer, who has one year of eligibility remaining, declared for the draft on April 22 with the option to return to school. He then opted to enter the transfer portal and has heard from programs like Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois and North Carolina among others.
The 22-year-old was among the 80-plus prospects invited to compete in the draft combine this week in Chicago, Illinois. The decision to withdraw from the draft likely stemmed from conversations with teams and scouts at the combine.
Mayer averaged 9.8 points, five rebounds, 1.2 steals and one assist on 40.9% shooting from the field in 33 games last season. He is viewed as perhaps the top transfer on the market and could help a program make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament next season.
The NCAA is currently in a recruiting dead period, meaning Mayer will not be able to take official visits until May 28. He has yet to make an official decision on next season.
