All in the Signorino Family: Matt Martin approved as Toms River South head football coach

The Toms River High School South head football coaching position will stay in the Signorino family after the Toms River Regional Schools Board of Education approved Matt Martin as head football coach Wednesday night, district athletic director Ted Gillen said Thursday.

A former quarterback and baseball player at Toms River South and former football and baseball player at Monmouth University, Martin is the grandson of legendary former Toms River South head coach Ron Signorino Sr. and the nephew of former Toms River South head coach Ron Signorino Jr.

Martin succeeds Ron Signorino Jr., who resigned as head coach last month after an 11-season stint as the school's head coach.

Ron Signorino Sr., was Toms River South's head coach from 1964-78 and again from 1997-2000. Toms River South won the NJSIAA South Group 4 championship in 1978 under Signorino Sr..

Ron Signorino Jr. is  the son of Ron Signorino Sr.  Toms River South went  45-65 under Signorino Jr. with NJSIAA playoff berths in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2021. Toms River South had an 8-3 season in 2013 and went 6-2 in 2020.

Martin is the son of former Toms River South football player Cliff Martin.

Toms River South went 3-7 last season. It will compete in the Shore Conference Freedom Division this season with Neptune, Ocean, Red Bank, Brick Memorial and Brick. It will open the season with a home game against Toms River East

Martin had stints as the offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator under Signorino Jr. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Donovan Catholic and Toms River East.

His scholastic football head coach was Ron Signorino Sr. He was a second baseman for consecutive sectional baseball championship teams under legendary head coach Ken Frank.
