A popular Northport bakery will close its doors Dec. 31, according to a social media post by its owner.

Mary Cesar, the owner of Mary's Cakes and Pastries, said she's retiring and that she and her husband plan to move away from Northport to New Mexico.

It's been a "great 15-plus years," Cesar said in a post on Mary's Cakes and Pastries' Facebook page.

"We’ve made a lot of friends, a lot of memories, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, though some more than others," Cesar wrote.

She said she appreciated the public's support after the April 27, 2011, tornado, and a dispute with the University of Alabama over cookies she sold with the school's script "A" trademark. In 2012, UA sent Cesar a cease-and-desist letter over the cookies, although the matter was later resolved.

"The support we’ve had from the community through our adventures with the university, the tornado, the new mixer, Art Night, cookie throw-downs, and countless others, has meant the world to me. I am so grateful for being a part of your lives, and you being part of mine," Cesar said.

She said that once she gets settled in New Mexico, she might continue baking commercially but on a smaller scale.

Cesar closed by saying Mary's Cakes and Pastries will have its usual offerings for this Christmas.

"Meanwhile, we will be open with our holiday menu for the next three weeks. The bakery will close for good on Friday, Dec. 31. We hope to see you before we leave," Cesar said.

Mary's Cakes and Pastries is at 412 22nd Ave. in Northport. For more information, go to www.maryscakesandpastries.com.
