Maryland pounds HPU in NCAA tourney

May 15—DURHAM — High Point University enjoyed an early lead in the first round of the NCAA women's lacrosse tournament Friday night at Duke University.

Maryland quickly wiped out the Panthers' upset hopes and cruised to a 17-6 win. The defending national champion Terrapins improved to 10-6 and will play Duke in the second round on Sunday. The Panthers finish the season 10-8

HPU enjoyed leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2, the last with 19:53 left in the first half. The Terrapins then flexed their muscles, tying the score with 16:02 left and then added eight more goals in the next 9:18 to go up 11-3. Three of the goals in the run were on free position shots.

HPU scored the other goal of the half to trail 11-4. Maryland scored the first six goals of the second half, and HPU added the last two.

Rachel Foster scored twice for the Panthers. Kayle Kyle, Mena Loescher, Abby Hormes and Nicole Pugh added one each. Hormes and Emma Geonvese each had an assist.
