Marvel fans have erected a billboard calling on the superhero franchise to bring Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man back from the dead.

The actor first played Tony Stark’s alter-ego in 2008’s Iron Man, going on to appear in the franchise for 11 years.

Tony is given a heroic ending in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, when he saves the universe from Thanos by using the infinity stones and sacrificing himself.

However, some fans are already calling for his return, with photos of a billboard that appeared in Los Angeles this week circulating on social media.

“For our beloved hero, please bring back Tony Stark,” it reads, along with the hashtag: “#BringBackTonyStarkToLife” and the date 24 April 2021, which marks two years since Endgame was first released.

It is not currently known which group or individual paid for the billboard.

While Tony Stark may be no more, his work will continue in the franchise.

In Spider-Man: Far From Home – which is set eight months after Endgame’s conclusion – Peter Parker (Tom Holland) receives a pair of glasses containing the artificial intelligence EDITH created by Stark, marking him out as Iron Man’s successor.

Downey Jr has also said that he’s “all done” with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shutting down rumours that he would reprise his role in the forthcoming Black Widow film.
