Martin Mayhew to depart 49ers front office for Washington
The 49ers won’t lose vice president of player personnel Adam Peters, but they will be losing VP of player personnel Martin Mayhew to the Washington Football Team per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
Mayhew’s role in Washington is unknown, but he won’t take over as general manager since the team is set to hire Marty Hurney to that position.
Since Hurney will take on the general manager title, Mayhew’s departure means the 49ers won’t be rewarded with a compensatory third-round draft pick. The expanded Rooney Rule requires minority candidates to be hired to head coach and general manager spots to receive those additional draft picks.
Matt Barrows of the Athletic wrote that San Francisco isn’t expecting any compensation.
Mayhew joined the 49ers front office in 2017 as a senior personnel executive. He received a promotion to VP of player personnel prior to the 2019 season. Before coming to San Francisco, Mayhew was with the New York Giants’ front office for a year. Prior to that he was with the Detroit Lions for 15 seasons, including seven as the general manager.
