Marooned flood victims await relief in northeast India

STORY: Locals rowed on floodwaters in boats and makeshift rafts while holding umbrellas as a fresh spell of rain added to their woes.

Locals in Barpeta town said they received insufficient relief measures.

"We only recieved three killograms of rice for our house. We received a negligible amount of pulses. How will that be sufficient? There are 8-9 members in our family," said local, Basha Malik.

In Assam and neighbouring Bangladesh, more than 150 people have died and millions have been displaced by the catastrophic floods in recent weeks, and in some low lying areas houses have been submerged.

In the past 24 hours, 22 districts of Assam reported floods. A cumulative of 134 people lost their lives to floods and landslides, so far.
