Mark Dobmeier wins first leg of Wayne Anderson Cup at RCS
Jul. 2—GRAND FORKS — Mark Dobmeier had his choices of lanes to run Friday night at River Cities Speedway.
For the track's career leader in wins, that's not what the rest of the field wanted to see.
Dobmeier took advantage of a fast track, winning the opening leg of the Wayne Anderson Cup, a four-event sprint series at River Cities Speedway this season.
Dobmeier grabbed the lead from Wade Nygaard with 13 laps to go, then held the rest of the field at bay in the 30-lap event.
The Wayne Anderson Cup is a tribute to the late car owner and founder of River Cities Speedway back in the late 1990s.
"It was a fast race," said Dobmeier. "The track stayed fairly sticky. The lanes changed a lot so you had to be all over the track to make it work."
Dobmeier's fastest lap time was 10.599 seconds. And he edged Nygaard by 1.210 seconds.
Brendan Mullen finished third, followed by Jade Hastings and Austin Pierce.
But there was another sprint winner at The Bullring.
Pierce, who ended last season as track's hottest driver, won the regularly scheduled 20-lap feature. The Anderson Cup feature originally was scheduled June 10 but was rained out.
Pierce made his winning move in the latter stages of the race. He overtook Mullen on a restart. Shortly afterward, Mullen's night was finished after a wicked crash in Turn 2.
He walked away from the wreck.
Pierce then was in control the rest of the way, surviving challenges from Hastings, Dobmeier, and Nygaard.
It was Pierce's first win of the season, but he's only raced three nights.
"It was a double-file restart; (Mullen) chose the top and there was a nice bit of moisture coming off the bottom if Turn 4. I got on that and beat him to the flagstand a little bit.
"Nygaard really challenged me on those restarts when I chose the outside."
For Pierce, it was his 46th career win.
For the second time this season, Lance Schill left The Bullring as a double winner, capturing both the Midwest modified and late model features.
The Langdon, N.D., driver dominated both races.
He started on the pole in the late model feature and beat Joey Pederson to the checkered flag by 1.416 seconds.
Shane Edginton finished third followed by Brad Seng and Ryan Corbett.
In the Midwest mod feature, Schill dominated again as he finished 1.926 seconds ahead of Matt Schow. Reise Stenberg was third, followed by Jamie Dietzler and Nate Reynolds.
Aaron Blacklance won the streets feature. Weston Ramsrud, Seth Klostreich, Dan McNamee and James Meagher rounded out the top five.
It was the Midseason championship night at the track.
