Marion County high school sports highlights and schedule this week

Another week of fall sports will end with the most anticipated swim meet of the year. Stay up to date with us for schedules and scores.

We compiled stats from games all around Marion County. Each week help us keep track of your favorite school and team. Email your results and highlights to apettigrew@gannett.com.

Volleyball

Monday Sept. 19

Forest defeats Dunnellon (25-4, 25-6, 25-12)

The Wildcats swept the Tigers. Forest bounced back from a two-match skid to bring it to a .500 record. Dunnellon drops its second game in a row.

Vanguard defeats Lake Weir (25-9, 25-11, 25-12)

The Knights continued their winning ways with a sweep. Senior Maddison Jacobs and sophomore Lillian Hart combined for 20 kills, each recording 10. They'll take their three-game winning streak on the road to Dunnellon.

Countryside Christian defeats Meadowbrook (17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23)

Meadowbrook dropped its second match of the season in four sets. Sophomore Angel Ross led the team with 13 kills, 1 ace, and 13 digs. The Mustangs turned in a great defensive performance with four players recording 10+ digs and receives.

Tuesday, Sept. 20

The Villages defeats Belleview (25-16, 25-17, 25-13)

The Tigers are in the midst of a two game skid after losing in straight sets to The Villages. Belleview will have a chance to get back in the winner's circle in a road game against Lecanto.

Gainesville defeats Forest (25-17, 25-17, 25-20)

Forest loses on their homecourt in three straight sets to the visiting Hurricanes. This is the second time the wildcats have loss to Gainesville this season. They'll get a chance to bounce back on Thursday as they face off against Vanguard.

North Marion defeats Lake Weir (25-18, 26-24, 25-9)

Vanguard defeats Dunnellon (25-8, 25-13, 25-8)

Vanguard takes three sets in a dominant fashion over Dunnellon. The Knights string together a four game winning streak to bring the to .500 for the first time this season. Sarah Beville recorded a team high 8 kills and 4 aces. Maddison Jacobs followed suit with 6 kills and 3 aces.

Trinity Catholic defeats Buchholz (25-19, 25-17, 25-15)

Trinity Catholic gives Buchholz their third straight loss. The competitive three set sweep is fifth win in a row. They'll take a short break before taking on Bishop Moore at home.

Redeemer defeats Mount Dora Christian Academy (25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 25-12)

The Saints rack up their eighth win of the season over the Bulldogs. It was a tight game that needed four sets to decide the winner.

Meadowbrook defeats OCA (25-24,- 25-5, 25-14)

The Mustangs handedly took down the Crusader in a three set sweep. Sophomore Angel Ross led all players with 17 kills. Senior Cianna Parchment and freshman Iva Fearon combined for 27 of the team's 30 assist. Sophomore Angely Antonio had a solid defensive game with team high 11 receives and 9 digs. Crusader senior Alexa Botticello recorded 3 blocks and 5 kills.

Wednesday, Sept. 21

Lecanto defeats Belleview (25-18, 26-24, 25-17)

The Rattlers were never to far away from stealing a set during their loss to Lecanto. This game is part of a three game skid for Belleview that brings them to 8-8 on the season.

Umatilla defeats Lake Weir (25-22, 25-12, 25-20)

The Hurricanes lose a competitive three set bout to the Bulldogs. Lake Weir looks for its first win of the season next Tuesday against Wildwood.

Thursday, Sept. 22

Vanguard at Forest: See story here on five-set match

North Marion defeats West Port (25-20, 25-14, 25-20)

North Marion picked up a win in a competitive three game sweep. This is the Colts second win in a row since their return from the River City Classic. Junior Kendall Smith led the Wolf Pack with 6 kills despite the loss.

Redeemer defeats Meadowbrook (25-18, 23-25, 25-11, 20-25, 16-14)

The Saints began another win streak after a competitive 5-set affair with the Mustangs. Meadowbrook had a game high 45 kills with sophomore Angel Ross (23) and senior Cianna Parchment combining for 30 of them. Redeemer Christian had a 30 kill duo of their own with senior Bella Acosta scoring 18 and junior Ashley Moss scoring 12. Overall great game statistically with 7 players leaving with double digit digs and two players ending the night with 20-plus assists.

Ocala Christian defeats Wildwood (25-23, 25-25, 25-23, 25-23)

The Crusaders take a four set win on Wildwood's home court. Junior Brianna Ray led the way with 8 aces. Senior Alexa Botticello 20 kills, 3 aces, and 4 blocks. Freshmen Brook Daunhauer and Bella Botticello combined for 23 kills with 7 and 16, respectively.

Friday, Sept. 23

Sarasota Cardinal Mooney defeats Belleview (25-9, 25-9, 25-18)

Cardinal Mooney starts a two game win streak with a three set romp of Belleview. This is the Rattlers' fourth loss in a row.

St. John defeats The Rock (26-24, 25-20, 26-24)

The Saints re-enter the winner's circle with a close three-set sweep of The Rock. Sophomores Sophie Ochoa and Rylee Palmateer combine for 26 of the St. John Lutheran's 35 kills.

Saturday, Sept. 24

Belleview defeats Sarasota Christian (16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 26-24)

The Rattlers bounce back from Friday's loss in a tight four set match at home. Belleview is now 9-9 on the season.

Slow Pitch Softball

Forest defeats North Marion, 10-4

The Wildcats topple the Colts with hot hitting. Jaylyn Burnside, Brookelynn Gilkes, and Luriana Gonzalez all posted multiple hits with Burnside going 3 for 5 at the plate. Forest walked away from the diamond with a game-high 14 hits.

Bowling

Monday Sept. 19

West Port defeats Forest, 1354-1322

The Wolfpack takes the overall win against Forest in the first split decision of the season. The Wildcats took two games away from the district leader behind Madison Roger's game high 173. CC Kinchen led all bowlers with a 176.

Dunnellon defeats Belleview, 346-0

A Belleview forfeit gave the Tigers their first overall victory of the season. Leonora Hoyte scored a game high 105.

Vanguard defeats Lake Weir, 1006-0

The Knights tie Forest for the second best record after a win by forfeit. Riley Young posted a season high 139.

Thursday, Sept. 22

Vanguard defeats Belleview, 1131-802

After a four game sweep of the Tigers, the Knight hold on to second place. Vanguard's Alexis Ashley finished with a game high 136. Belleview's Jordan Jones was close behind with a score of 131.

Forest defeats Lake Weir, 1281-784

Forest holds onto their share of second place with a four game victory over the Hurricanes. Madison Rogers recorded a game-high 157 for the Wildcats. Empress Tucker led Lake Weir with 117.

West Port defeats Dunnellon, 1453-501

The Wolfpack continues their dominance with a four game sweep of Dunnellon. CC Kinchen unleashed a league 198 in the West Port win. The Tiger's high score came from Leonora Hoyte with 107.

Boys golf

Tuesday, Sept. 20

Vanguard defeats Belleview 214-172

The Knights take a commanding 42 stroke victory over Belleview. Zach Phan paced Vanguard with a score of 38. Freshman Kale Fashik shot a team low 46 for the Tigers.

Forest defeats Buchholz 158-168

Forest beats their second Gainesville team in as many meetings after Tuesday's ten stroke win over Buchholz. Sophomore Xavier Sahajpal's eagle on the final hole helped him medal with a match low 35. Ryder Robinson of Buchholz shot a team low 38.

Wednesday, Sept. 21

Crystal River defeats Dunnellon 191-201

The Tigers fall ten strokes short of their first victory of the season. Dunnellon is showing improvement as they post their lowest score of the season at 201. Trevor Smith and Julian Lynn both shot personal best of 55 and 54, respectively.

Thursday, Sept. 22

Vanguard defeats Dunnellon 187-192

The Knights took home a 5 swing victory at their home course, Ocala National. Vanguard's Zach Phan led all golfers with a season low 36. The last time these two teams met Vanguard won by twenty strokes. The Tigers are showing major improvement breaking 200 for the first time this season. Tristan Robinson and Trevor Smith, whose only golf competitively for three weeks, posted personal records of 53 and 44.

Chiefland defeats Eastside and Belleview, 173-187-211

The Tigers fall to Chiefland and Gainesville's Eastside.

Tuesday, Sept. 20

Thursday, Sept. 22

Forest defeats Dunnellon, 69-41

Forest wins the overall meet with four first place individuals and winning two of the three relays. These are the wildcasts first place winner: Ben Camp in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, Gage Alder in the 200 individual medley, Taggart Macbean in the 50 freestyle, Carlos Frosolono in the 100 breast and individual diving. The Tigers first place winners are: Dawson Cook in the 50 yard freestyle, Illia Vernon in the 100 yard backstroke, Fontaine Ellis and Vernon Cook in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Trinity Catholic defeats Belleview and Lake Weir 54-45-2

The Celtics won a close match on Belleview's senior night. The Rattlers honored 14 senior the most Coach Payne has had in his 11 years career. Trinity Catholic's first place finisher are: Brendan Held in the 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle, Xavier Washington in the 200 yard IM and 100 yard backstroke, Andes Gimon in the 100 yard butterfly, Brock Moorman in the 100 yard breaststroke, and Austin Zameck in the 500 yard Freestyle. Trinity's relay winners are: Brendan Held, Logan Braun, Brock Moorman, Xavier Washington in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Belleview's first place individual finishers are: Garrett Payne in the 50 yard freestyle. The Rattler's relay winner's are: Derek Balliet, Caedmon Attenhofer, Jeremiah Taddeo, Garrett Payne in the 200 yard medley relay and Garrett Payne, Caedmon Attenhofer, Derek Balliet, Jeremiah Taddeo in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Girls swimming

Forest defeats Dunnellon, 60-19

The Wildcats took first place in all events they competed in on Thursday. Dunnellon has a smaller team and did not race in every events but did have a first place finishers. The first place finishers for Forest are: Ashley Sampson in the 200 and 500 free style, Owynn Liles in the 100 freestyle and 100 back, and Kayden Prestipino in the 50 freestyle and 100 breast. The first place finishers for the Tigers are: Keyanna Hanchor in the 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard butterfly.

Trinity Catholic defeats Belleview and Lake Weir 52-35-0

The Celtics take home 6 individual medals and all three relay medals in their meet with Belleview and Lake Weir. The Rattlers won two individual races. The first place individual finishers for Trinity Catholic are: Alexandra Stevens in the 200 yard freestyle and100 yard backstroke, Alexandra Zameck in the 200 yard IM and 500 yard freestyle, Alejandra Perez in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke, and . The Celtic's relay winners are: Alexandra Zameck, Jaelyn Munser, Alexandra Stevens, Alejandra Perez in the 200 yard medley relay and Maren Kimball, Hannah Smith, Katherine Tool, Jaelyn Munser in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Belleview's first place finisher are: Kyla Clark in the 100 yard butterfly and Macy Fraunfelter in the 100 yard freestyle.

Girls Cross Country

Tohopekaliga XC Invitational

Vanguard girls take first place in Tohopekaliga without their top runner. Freshman Ruby Scott finished fourth overall to lead all Knight in the competition. Five runners placed within the top 30 including three freshmen(Savanah Risner, 19, and Emma Curtis, 29).

Nature Coast Shark Invitational

St. John Lutheran finished in an area best second place. Seven Saints finished in the top 30. Freshman Emma Reese paced her team with a personal record 21:49.60 and fourth place finish. Sophomore Payton Nazzari and freshman Reese Beaser placed in the top 10. Nazzari's 22:17.30 is a personal best

Dunnellon earned third place. Four Tigers ran in the top 20. Sophomore Emma Hatcher's time of 23:45.30 placed her tenth and first among her team.

Trinity Catholic took fifth place. Courtney Hisey ran a team best 25:59.40 landing her in 19th place. Four Celtics finished in the top 30.

Boys Cross Country

Tohopekaliga XC Invitational

The Knights claimed third place in the overall meet. Junior Clayton Knight ran a season best 16:22.05 good for third place. Three Vanguard runners ran in the top 30.

Nature Coast Shark Invitational

Trinity Catholic took third place in Saturday's meet. Junior Cedric McFadden was the Celtics and the area's best runner finishing in third placed with a time of 17:50.30. Five Celtics finished in the top 30.

Dunnellon boys finished in fifth placed among 13 teams. Ethan Slagle finished 15th with a time of 19:42.80. four Tigers finished within the top 20.

St. John Lutheran didn't have enough runners to compete as team but two Saint finished in the top 25. Freshman Aiden Mann placed 11th with a time of 19:24.40.
