Mariano Rivera opens up on being baseball's first unanimous Hall of Famer
There's never been another Hall of Famer like Mariano Rivera.
When the legendary New York Yankees closer and MLB's all-time saves leader takes the stage Sunday afternoon in Cooperstown, he'll do so as the first unanimous selection by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
That's a remarkable honor. But don't worry, it hasn't changed Rivera's perspective.
Yahoo Sports' Hannah Keyser recently sat down with the 2019 Hall of Fame inductee and discovered he's still the same humble, yet determined man. Only now his primary focus has gone from dominating batters to helping others in the community.
In the interview, Rivera opens up on a variety of topics. We find out what it means to Rivera to be the first unanimous Hall of Famer, and the approach he took that helped him earn unequaled respect from his teammates, opponents, the fans and the media.
In a lighter moment, we find out just how well Rivera knows some of his own career stats and trivia.
Rivera also discusses his plans for the Mariano Rivera Foundation, which is aiming to build a learning center for youths in need in New Rochelle, New York. Rivera recently partnered with eBay to create the Mariano Rivera Hall of Fame collection. All of those proceeds were donated to the learning center project.
