One of free agency’s biggest dominoes has fallen.

Infielder Marcus Semien has agreed to a 7-year, $175 million deal with the Rangers, according to reports.

Fansided’s Robert Murray first reported the signing.

Semien, 31, played mostly second base for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021, but has been primarily a shortstop in his two previous stop with the Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics. He has expressed a desire to return to shortstop.

The Rangers, who were rumored to be seeking a big splash, will be acquiring one of the best power-hitters available this offseason. After struggling with the A’s during the shortened 2020 season, Semien bounced back in a big way after signing a one-year deal with the Blue Jays. Semien finished 3rd in AL MVP voting after he slashed .265/.334/.538 with 45 home runs and led MLB with 86 extra-base hits. Semien also won his first Gold Glove and did not miss a game for the second time in his career.

Semien’s signing takes one of the most-attractive options off the table for both the Yankees and Mets, but it’s unknown whether this signing with spur the other star free agent infielders (Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Javy Baez and Trevor Story) to sign new deals before the potential Dec. 1 lockout.
