'Marching with the Village' will celebrate a day of unity

Jan. 20—HENDERSON — Law enforcement and local residents will unite for a "Marching with the Village" rally on Feb. 17.

The event will feature a series of forums in the courtyard of the Henderson Police Department at 200 Breckenridge St. and nearby locations.

Activities will get underway at 11 a.m.

Event organizer Raven Burns said the purpose of the event is to involve law enforcement and local residents in a dialogue about social justice, equality and civic engagement.

There will be give and take. Community members will have an opportunity to talk about their experiences, and they will also learn about their rights and the policies that govern the community.

Other community organizations will bring their own messages to the event.

Representatives of the Granville-Vance Health Department will be present to provide information about COVID-19 vaccinations, testing and ways to stay safe, both day to day and in the current pandemic.

The Vance County Arts Council will provide crafts and other activities to entertain children and families.

Lunch will be served on a first-come-first-served basis.

Capt. Chris Ball of the Henderson Police Department said officials are "in the process of getting her a permit and participating." He added, "What she wants is collaboration."

Burns stressed the importance of communication between the public and law enforcement. "This is a great opportunity for everyone to work together and get to know the person behind the badge," she said.

"We encourage people to wear black, blue, white or yellow to represent unity and collaboration," Burns added.
