ASHLAND - Students and families from Mapleton Elementary School gathered Saturday morning for breakfast and activities with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Attendees, who were asked to RSVP by Nov. 30, were first served a pancake and sausage breakfast.

After breakfast, students were able to write a letter to Santa or talk and take pictures with him. Mrs. Claus also came and read a Christmas-related book while attendees were able to make Christmas cards that will be sent to local nursing homes throughout Ashland County.

While the event was free, attendees were able to make monetary donations or bring non-perishable food items that will be used in the elementary school food pantry.

This event has been put on by the Mapleton Parent Teacher Organization in the past, but this year it partnered with the District Leadership Literacy team to “make it a more literacy-focused event,” district literacy coach Cassie Swanson wrote in an email.

“Mapleton Local Schools is working to encourage and develop literacy skills inside and outside the classroom,” Swanson wrote. “... The event is typically well attended by our families, and we want to encourage literacy-rich environments and model various ways parents can incorporate literacy at home.”
