BAY HARBOR — Less than a year after opening their first restaurant, the team that brought Maple + Batter to Bay Harbor has officially opened their second restaurant, NOMAD.

NOMAD is the evening location to compliment the brunch restaurant. Maple + Batter customers can enjoy brunch during the day, and spend the evening enjoying wine and food at NOMAD.

The spacious building at 795 Front St. has a cozy and warm atmosphere with tones of warm, brown leather and dark wood. Soft chairs surround a table in front of a fireplace and large wood tables for seating groups makes NOMAD a setting designed for socializing.

“We want it to feel like another home, an extension of someone else just sitting at their house enjoying a meal. They can come into NOMAD and feel the same way,” co-owner Philip Morrison said.

The NOMAD menu is designed with socializing in mind. Servers will explain the non-traditional concept of small plates to customers and encourage them to work their way through the menu, which is inspired by food around the world.

Small plates are smaller servings of a dish that allow a group to order several things and share the food.

“What we're hoping for is you look through the menu and you pick out different things that the group all want to try and everyone tries a bit of our different dishes, so they're working their way through the menu,” Philip said.

“You can certainly go in and have that traditional style of — have an appetizer, have a main, have a dessert, we offer all of that. But the intent and the design of our menu was so that it can be shared. Every one of these dishes has a portion size that allows for sharing the dish across multiple parties.”

Another homey touch to the restaurant is personal wine lockers. Regular customers can rent a locker and store their own wine so it’s ready for them whenever they visit.

NOMAD officially opened on Wednesday, May 11, and has been busy ever since. While still a new restaurant, the owners already have plans for ways of adding to and improving the dining experience. Things like a pizza oven and pizza bar, outdoor seating and a separate room for desserts and pastries.

“I think you can go to a lot of places and have that core, sound meal but this is a little bit more unique,” Co-owner Bryant Morrison said. “So it gives a new experience for (customers) coming to dine. And I think that, as people come in and continue to experience this, it's just going to become more of a consistent norm.”
