Man set for trial in Longmont sexual assault case

Aug. 9—A man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Longmont in 2020 is set for trial.

Clyde Henry Townsed, 40, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Boulder District Court to sexual assault — helpless victim; and sexual assault — victim incapable of appraising conduct. The charges are Class 3 and Class 4 felonies, respectively.

Townsed is now set for a five-day trial starting Feb. 27 and a motions hearing Jan. 12.

Townsed, who appeared virtually from the Boulder County Jail, agreed to extend the deadline on his speedy trial rights in order to accommodate the trial date.

He remains in custody at the Boulder County Jail on $10,000 bond.

According to an affidavit, Longmont police were called to UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital just before midnight July 26, 2020, after a woman came in for a sex assault examination.

The woman told police she was camping with a group that included Townsed the night before. The woman said that she had done some drugs and went to sleep, then woke up to Townsed sexually assaulting her.

The woman was able to get Townsed off of her and went back to sleep. The next day she woke up before Townsed and left the site. She then told others what happened, and she went to the hospital.

According to the affidavit, the sex assault examination report filed in October found DNA from an unknown male contributor that was later matched to Townsed.
