Man killed, police officer injured in crash following chase in Johnson County on Saturday

One man died and a police officer was injured after their vehicles crashed into an embankment following a chase Saturday, according to the Johnson County Sheriff Office.

The crash involved Trafalgar Police Department officer Dustin Moody and occurred Saturday around 3:30 a.m.

Moody was stationary in the parking lot of a Johnson County business when a Chevrolet pickup drove by at a high rate of speed and squealed its tires as it turned, according to investigators.

The officer caught up with the vehicle, which then disregarded a stop sign, police said. The officer activated his emergency lights and sirens, but the pickup did not stop.

Moody told investigators he continued to follow the pickup until both vehicles crashed into an embankment where the road ended at a T-intersection. Drivers must stop and turn north or south at the intersection where the crash occurred, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at County Road 300 South and County Road 600 West. Moody radioed for help after the crash and both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles.

The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene and identified as Jacob Roberts, 23, of Nineveh, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Moody was transported to a hospital in serious condition with back, hip, leg and internal injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
