Man killed by officers in Forsyth County wanted for west Charlotte murder, Ch. 9 learns

Channel 9 has learned the man shot and killed by police in Forsyth County was wanted for the the murder of a man in west Charlotte.

Authorities killed Alexander Dekontee Weah after a shootout at a gas station in Clemmons on Friday. The State Bureau Of Investigation said he was shot as police tried closing in on his arrest. Officials said Weah was wanted for a murder in Charlotte.

Multiple officers opened fire, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Paul Weis, after officials said Weah shot at police. Four officers with the Greensboro Police Department also fired shots.

On Monday, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office said Weah was wanted for killing 31-year-old James Michael Hinson on Aug. 3. CMPD responded to a west Charlotte apartment complex on Nobles Avenue where police said Hinson was gunned down in daylight.

According to a search warrant filed in the case, Weah and Hinson got into an argument before a gun was pulled and Weah killed Hinson. Detectives said the two men were involved with the same woman.

A woman told Channel 9 that she heard the single shot that killed Hinson.

“When I came out, they were pulling the sheet over the young man’s face,” she said.

Channel 9 looked into Weah’s past and saw he had a restraining order filed against him by his wife in July. At the time, court documents shows authorities took four handguns and an AR-15 from him.

It’s still not clear what gun police believed he used in either of last week’s shooting, but neighbors in west Charlotte are left stunned by the series of events.

“Too much shooting really in Charlotte,” a resident said.

The police officers who shot Weah are on paid, administrative leave, per policy while the SBI investigates. CMPD Internal Affairs said it will conduct a simultaneous internal investigation.
