Delaware man finds rare purple pearl while eating $14 appetizer: 'A funny story'

Talk about extra bang for your buck.

What is inflation and what causes it?

A man who spent $14 on a clam appetizer discovered a rare purple pearl hiding in his bite.

Scott Overland was vacationing in Wilmington, Del., with his wife and two children. The family was dining at Salt Air in Rehoboth Beach when they ordered the $14 littleneck clams starter. Overland almost sent the clams back because they came with a pepper garnish, which is not his wife’s favorite.

“I guess sometimes you get rewarded for not being a pain at restaurants!” Overland told USA Today.

But when he took a bite of the clam, he got more than he bargained for.

“I thought I bit down on a piece of shell or something,” Overland told USA Today. “My wife thought it was a piece of candy because it looked like those candy dots.”

Upon examination, Overland discovered it was a pearl shaped like a button.

“We had never heard of a pearl in a clam. I always thought they came in oysters,” Overland told USA Today.

However, they were mistaken; pearls form in clams and mollusks. Overland was nibbling on a northern quahog clam from Cherrystone Aqua Farms in the Chesapeake Bay. These quahogs create pearls in white, brown and shades of purple. They’re typically more button-like and less spherical than the pearls one wears on a necklace.

Overland considers the purple pearl “a fun story and a fun memory” and will have it appraised.
