Man dies in Rockford shooting

ROCKFORD — A homicide on the city's southeast side Wednesday night is under investigation.

Officers responded at about 6:40 p.m. to the area of 11th Street and 6th Avenue for reports of a traffic accident and a possible shooting.

A man suffering from a gunshot wound was located in the street near the intersection, according to a Rockford Police Department news release.

The victim, identified by the Winnebago County Coroner's Office as Cleonta Day, 31, of Rockford , was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, Day was shot while inside his vehicle at the 600 block of 12th Street. He then drove toward Keith Creek where he got out of the vehicle before it crashed into the creek.
