Man dead, deputy injured in Eagle Point police shooting

Feb. 24—A man is dead and two others are injured, including a Jackson County sheriff's deputy, after a shooting Tuesday night in Eagle Point.

Sheriff's deputies and Eagle Point police officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 100 block of Idlewood Drive at 7:21 p.m., a news release said. Details on that disturbance were not immediately available. A man who allegedly had been involved had left the scene with another man in an SUV before officers arrived.

Police tracked the SUV down in a matter of minutes, stopping it in a church parking lot on Stevens Street near the intersection with Idlewood Drive. The two men were inside.

The next sequence of events was not immediately available. At one point, police and the men started firing at each other, with one of the deputies reporting shots were being fired at 7:36 p.m. It isn't known which department shot into the SUV, how many shots were fired or which of the men fired from inside the SUV.

One of the men in the SUV died, amd the other was transported to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries was not known. A deputy suffered a minor injury after he was struck by a bullet 1/4"fired by a subject in the SUV,1/4" the release said.

The case is under investigation by the multi-department Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit, with Oregon State Police as the lead agency.
