Man arrested in Longmont for weapon possession while on probation

Nov. 26—A man was arrested Tuesday in Longmont for possessing a weapon while on probation for a previous offense.

According to Longmont Public Safety spokesperson Robin Ericson, a Longmont police officer responded to a report of a firearm found in a room rental at 12:19 a.m. Tuesday in the 1600 block of Main Street. Owners said nobody was supposed to be in the room where the gun was found, and the officer booked the gun into Longmont Police property and evidence as lost and found property.

At 1:36 a.m., the same officer was dispatched to a disturbance the 1600 block of Main Street, where a man said the firearm was his and said he was upset that the police had taken it, Ericson said. The man had been mistakenly allowed to use the rental room due to a miscommunication.

When police spoke with the man, he said a friend had given him the gun to sell, according to Ericson. Officers discovered the man was already on probation for a felony menacing incident in Colorado Springs, and that he has a criminal history in Colorado and Florida. The man claimed he'd been arrested multiple times and had done time in prison.

Police arrested the man and took him to the Boulder County Jail.
