Man arrested, charged in Alabama River Parkway shooting

Police arrested a Peterman man who they say was in the process of committing a crime with a shooting victim before the teen was killed.

Montgomery police Capt. Saba Coleman said Christopher Rodgers, 29, was charged with felony murder in connection with the death of 19-year-old Eric Surles, Jr.

Police announced they were conducting a death investigation after Surles was killed in a shooting along the Alabama River Parkway on Friday afternoon.

Coleman said Surles was shot during the commission of a crime that both he and Rodgers committed.

According to court records filed Thursday morning, Surles and Rodgers had kidnapped another man before the shooting occurred.

Rodgers was taken into custody Wednesday and booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility with bail set at $1.5 million in accordance with the new bail schedule approved by the Alabama Supreme Court.

Despite Rodgers' charge, the case will remain a death investigation.
