Man accused in string of 2019 Indianapolis business robberies sentenced to life in prison
UPDATE: Jerry Davis was sentenced Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021, to life in prison for two counts of interference with commerce by robbery and attempted interference with commerce by robbery. He also received 20 years in prison for an additional count of interference with commerce by robbery, according to records from the U.S. District Court Southern District of Indiana.
The sentences will run concurrently, according to court records.
Davis received the sentence pursuant to the federal three strikes law, according to a news release from United States Attorney’s Office Southern District of Indiana.
ORIGINAL STORY: An Indianapolis man faces 11 felony charges in connection with a string of robberies in a two-week period in November.
Jerry Davis, 49, is charged with four counts of armed robbery, five counts of robbery, one count of strangulation and one count of corrupt business influence, according to online court records. Davis also faces four counts of battery.
The robberies and one robbery attempt took place from Nov. 8-20, police said. Most occurred on the north and east sides of Indianapolis.
On Nov. 8, Davis allegedly pepper-sprayed a Broad Ripple liquor store employee before taking the till out of a cash register and leaving, according to a probable-cause affidavit. Three days later at an east-side Subway, he allegedly stuck a pistol into the back of an employee, who then handed him $200 from a register, the affidavit says.
Police arrested Davis on Nov. 20, after an attempted robbery at a northwest-side gas station and a robbery at a far east-side Denny's, according to the affidavit. Davis allegedly struck a gas station employee with a metal pipe several times before the employee was able to activate the alarm. Davis, who left without taking anything, went to the Denny's, the affidavit says.
Davis allegedly robbed the Denny's with the same pipe, according to the affidavit.
An officer later saw Davis driving northbound in the 2300 block of Shadeland Avenue. Davis, being pursued by police, turned into an apartment complex in the 3800 block of North Emerson Avenue and allegedly tossed a cash register drawer out of the vehicle as he stopped, according to the affidavit.
Police took Davis into custody without incident. He refused to make a statement to police, and was arrested in connection with the Denny's robbery.
Davis, who was charged Nov. 21 in connection with the Denny's robbery, was charged Thursday in connection with the other robberies, according to court records. Hearings for Davis are scheduled for Dec. 9 and Jan. 7, 2020.
