Man accused of calling Lafayette security guard racial slurs, hitting him with ski pole takes plea deal

May 11—A man accused of hitting a Good Samaritan Medical Center security guard with a ski pole and calling him racial slurs took a plea deal in his case and was sentenced to probation and time served.

William James Millensifer, 36, pleaded guilty to bias-motivated crime causing injury, a Class 5 felony. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days of probation, with 90 days of credit for time served.

Prosecutors dismissed one count of second-degree assault as part of the plea deal.

According to the arrest affidavit, Millensifer was discharged from Lafayette's Good Samaritan Medical Center on Aug. 6, and he was escorted to the parking lot by two security officers, Tyron Lyles and William Farnsworth, after refusing to leave.

In the parking lot, Millensifer "began to be verbally antagonistic" and struck Lyles on his hip with a metal ski pole, according to the affidavit.

Millensifer also called Lyles racial slurs through the assault.

Lyles told officers that Millensifer also hit his left leg with the ski pole, and the pain level was at a five out of 10. Farnsworth was able to intervene and placed Millensifer in handcuffs until police arrived.
