Man, 24, dies trying to walk across Shady Hills Road, troopers say

SHADY HILLS — A 24-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV driver while walking across Shady Hills Road on Thursday night, troopers say.

The incident took place about 8:29 p.m. north of Peace Boulevard and Platinum Drive, which are the same road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 61-year-old Spring Hill woman was driving an SUV north on Shady Hills Road approaching Platinum Drive. A 24-year-old New Port Richey man was walking east across the road and entered the northbound lane, troopers say.

The man was then struck and injured. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The driver was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured. Troopers did not release any other information about the crash.

The Highway Patrol did not release the names of those involved in the crash because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law.
