DETOUR — In order to take the next step in the postseason, the Mackinaw City girls’ basketball team knows they’ll have to go through some tough Eastern U.P. programs.

So, the 2022 regular season has a focus on seeing as many as they can first.

On Wednesday, step one was heading to DeTour for a matchup against a tough Cedarville-DeTour team and step one came with the success of a 57-46 victory for the Comets.

The Islanders entered the contest at 3-0 on the young season and Mackinaw City head coach Jake Huffman knows what caliber of win Wednesday’s was.

“We played an excellent defensive game, rebounded well and continued to have great ball movement finding open shooters,” said Huffman. “I am very proud of the girls’ effort in beating an Islanders team that came in on a strong start with victories over Hillman, Pickford and Frankfort.”

The Comets improved to 2-0 on the season and continued to share the ball, assisting on 16 of 18 field goals.

Mackinaw grabbed a 19-9 lead after the first quarter, then again led 30-14 at the break. By the close of three, Mackinaw led in a 40-22 game.

Cedarville-DeTour then rained in 3-pointers in the fourth, then the Comets closed out the game with some strong free throw shooting.

“I was proud of the composure we showed down the stretch when the game got close and intense,” said Huffman. “All of the girls delivered strong minutes tonight, especially defensively on a team that was averaging 61 points a game coming into tonight's game.

“Julia Sullivan, Jersey Beauchamp and Madison Smith had great nights in the paint defensively and offensively.”

Smith led with 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists, Sullivan had 13 points and seven rebounds and Larissa Huffman scored 12, had seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Marlie Postula also had 10 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three assists, Gracie Beauchamp had five points and seven rebounds and Jersey Beauchamp added six rebounds.

Mackinaw City (2-0) will next head to Cooks Big Bay de Noc on Friday, Dec. 9. They’ll then return home on Tuesday, Dec. 13 to open Northern Lakes Conference play against Ellsworth.
