Jan. 29—The Lynx are reportedly adding one of the best players in the history of women's basketball into their fold. Minnesota and legendary wing Angel McCoughtry have agreed to a deal to bring the 35-year-old to Minnesota on a free-agent deal, per multiple reports.

Free-agent deals can be made official Feb. 1.

McCoughtry is a five-time all-star, six-time All-WNBA performer, two-time league scoring champ, seven-time first-team all-defense honoree, two-time Olympic gold medalist and recently was named one of the WNBA's top 25 players in the first 25 years of its history.

She's done everything at this point in her career, except with a WNBA title. That continued pursuit now brings McCoughtry to Minnesota, where the Lynx are a near annual championship contender.

She certainly has come close in the past. As Atlanta's star guard, McCoughtry thrice led the Dream to the Finals. They were swept each time, twice by ... Minnesota. McCoughtry left Atlanta for the first time in her career in 2020, heading to Las Vegas, where she helped the Aces reach the Finals in 2020, only to fall to Seattle.

She was set to run it back with Las Vegas in 2021, but she tore her ACL and meniscus in her right knee last May and missed the season.

Still, McCoughtry — who was spotted courtside at a Timberwolves game at Target Center earlier this month, sitting with Lynx forward Napheesa Collier — was still a highly productive player in her last full season. She averaged 14.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals while shooting 52 percent from the floor in 2020.

McCoughtry's presence adds another versatile scorer to a roster that needs it. Minnesota has a number of players who can put the ball in the bucket, but not necessarily players who can create for themselves. McCoughtry, assuming she can regain pre-injury form, checks that box, as coach Cheryl Reeve and the Lynx appear to be loading up for another title run after Sylvia Fowles announced earlier this month that the all-world center will return to Minnesota for another season.

The Lynx are clearly in win-now mode, which makes their pairing with McCoughtry the perfect marriage.
