Who should be the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's Athlete of the Week?

Athletes from basketball and football turned in stellar performances last week and are are among the finalists for Lone Star Varsity Athlete of the Week.

Coaches can nominate student-athletes in all varsity sports by sending an email by noon Sunday to sports@lubbockonline.com. Please include: name, grade, pertinent stats and use the subject head: "Athlete of the Week nomination" to ensure it's seen.

The poll opens Monday morning and will close at noon Thursday, with the winners announced Friday each week.

Female athletes

Lauren Bayouth, Sr., All Saints — Led the team with 18 points in a win over Anton.

Kendall Swaffer, Jr., Kingdom Prep — Scored 17 points in a win over Midland Home School.

K'Lynn Tarin, Jr., Meadow — Scored 17 points in a win over Hart.

Male athletes

Zyrin Brantley, Sr., Monterey — Scored 39 points in a 79-78 win over Canyon Randall. He also averaged 27 points over three games during the Thanksgiving break.

Will Hawley, Sr., Lubbock Christian — Totaled eight tackles, including two for a loss, and two sacks in a state semifinal win over Bryan Brazos Christian.

Brent Robinson, Fr., Whitharral — Had an interception, fumble recovery and tackle for loss at the goal line, in addition to a 38-yard touchdown run, in a state quarterfinal win over Balmorhea.
