LSU football vs Texas A&M report card: Ed Orgeron earns an 'A' in his final home game

BATON ROUGE — LSU football upset no. 14 Texas A&M to become bowl eligible on Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

Max Johnson connected with Jaray Jenkins for a 28-yard touchdown with 20 seconds left as the Tigers (6-6, 3-5 SEC) clinched a 27-24 win over the Aggies (8-4, 4-4). It was the final home game for outgoing LSU coach Ed Orgeron.

Offense

Johnson threw three touchdown passes against Texas A&M, moving him to fourth in LSU history with 27 in a single season. Despite being sacked six times, Johnson hung in the pocket and delivered the game-winning touchdown.

Johnson finished 22-of-38 passing for 306 yards and three touchdowns.

LSU was held to 10 points in the second half after leading 17-7 at halftime. The Tigers outgained the Aggies 412-to-296

Tyrion Davis-Price became LSU’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Clyde Edwards-Helaire in 2019.

Defense

LSU harassed quarterback Zach Calzada with the blitz, but only sacked him twice. Devon Achane accounted for 121 total yards for the Aggies, running 11 times and catching five passes.

Texas A&M took the lead on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Calzada to Jalen Preston with 7:33 to play. Calzada finished 20-of-35 passing for 242 yards and three touchdowns. LSU held Isaiah Spillers, the SEC’s third-leading rusher, to 32 yards on 11 carries.

Special teams

Cade York moved to third all-time in career field goals made (52) and fourth in attempts (61) at LSU. He finished 2-for-2, making kicks of 50 and 47 yards.

Coaching

LSU coached around its deficiencies on the offensive line to upset a ranked opponent. Orgeron kept two streaks alive — the Tigers haven’t failed to reach bowl eligibility or had a losing season since 1999.
