Loveland woman dies after tractor hits overpass on I-25 south of Berthoud

Aug. 9—A 32-year-old Loveland woman was killed Monday evening after a tractor on the back of a tractor-trailer struck an overpass on Interstate 25.

All northbound and southbound lanes on I-25 are closed at milepost 245 and Weld County Road 34 is also closed while inspectors assess the bridge to ensure it is structurally sound, said Trooper Josh Lewis of Colorado State Patrol.

Lewis said CSP was called to the scene about 6:05 p.m. after the tractor hit the bridge while driving north on I-25.

A 2011 Honda SUV was also involved in the crash, but Lewis said it's still unclear how. The driver, the Loveland woman, died. A juvenile passenger was taken to a hospital. He did not know the passenger's age or the severity of their injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer remained on scene after the crash and was uninjured, Lewis said.

Jared Fiel, spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Transportation, about 8:30 p.m. Monday said inspectors are headed to the scene to examine the bridge.

He said Colo. 66 is now congested with traffic because drivers exiting I-25 south of Berthoud. He recommends drivers take U.S. 287 or U.S. 85 to avoid long delays.

Fiel said CDOT is planning for an "extensive closure" and advises people to plan to take alternative routes during their Tuesday morning commute.

"We are really trying to encourage everyone to avoid that area if possible," he said.
