Louisiana sprinter commits to Tech in two sports
Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire continued on Monday to add players with speed to his recruiting class. So did Tech track and field coach Wes Kittley.
Marquez "Macho" Stevenson, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound sprinter from Shreveport (La.) Captain Shreve, committed to the Red Raiders. In his announcement, Stevenson said he will be competing for the football and track teams.
Playing for a 10-2 team last season, Stevenson caught nine passes for 262 yards and five touchdowns in nine games. The Red Raiders are recruiting him as a cornerback prospect.
At the 2021 AAU Junior Olympic Games at Turner Stadium in Humble, Stevenson ran the 400 meters in 46.85 seconds for second place in the boys' 15-16 age division. According to milesplit.com, Stevenson had season-best times on the track this year of 10.59 seconds in the 100 meters, 21.51 in the 200 and 47.18 in the 400.
Stevenson also has been offered scholarships to play football from Mississippi State, Indiana, Austin Peay, Grambling, New Mexico State and Sam Houston State, according to recruiting services.
He's the second football recruit Tech has added in the past week known for his achievements on the track. Miquel Dingle, a 6-2, 205-pound inside linebacker prospect, has run the 110-meter hurdles in 13.56 seconds, putting him among the top 10 high-school hurdlers in the nation this year.
