Louisiana man arrested after driving a Walmart shopping cart to avoid getting a DWI
A Louisiana man was arrested after he stole an electric-powered shopping cart from Walmart, in an attempt to avoid getting caught drunk-driving.
Kendall Williams, 32, was charged with felony unauthorized use of a movable after driving the cart — which is reserved for customers with disabilities — between two separate bars.
Officers with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office responded to one of the bars early Sunday morning after receiving a call about someone parking a motorized cart between two cars. When they arrived at the scene, a security guard at the bar identified Williams as the man who had been driving the stolen vehicle.
Police then questioned Williams, who reportedly admitted he had taken the cart to avoid driving his own car while intoxicated.
"During his investigation, the deputy learned that Williams had claimed he was at a different bar and believed he could get charged with DWI if he drove his own vehicle," the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office wrote in a Facebook post describing the case.
Williams was not charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI), so he was technically successful on that front. However, the 32-year-old was charged with a felony for taking the electric vehicle. His bond has been set for $2,500.
Perhaps surprisingly, Williams is not the first person to be charged for stealing a Walmart cart this year. In August, a Tennessee man was arrested after reportedly driving one of the carts along the side of a roadway.
In September, a Kentucky man was accused of stealing 10 shopping carts from the store, as well as driving one while intoxicated. He was charged with public intoxication and theft.
