Penn State hopes to put the finishing touches on a solid Class of 2023 this week with the traditional signing period. The Nittany Lions are also fresh into putting together the foundation for a promising Class of 2024. But because you can never be too late to jump into the Class of 2025, Penn State now has its first commit on the board for the Class of 2025.

Jaelyne Matthews, a four-star offensive tackle from Toms River, New Jersey, formally announced his commitment to Penn State on Monday after committing during a meeting with head coach James Franklin and the staff over the weekend.

Matthews is a big get for Penn State. The high school sophomore already measures 6-5 and 290 pounds, making him an easy player to stand out to recruiters. Matthews committed to Penn State over offers from Georgia, Ohio State, Rutgers, Tennessee, Syracuse, Texas A&M, and more. And despite the commitment, expect more offers to fly in.

Matthews is rated as a four-star recruit by 247Sports, On3, and Rivals this far out in the recruiting process. Having such a lofty ranking two years out is telling, as you might expect. 247Sports ranks Matthews as the no. 6 offensive tackle in the country and the third highest-ranked player in the state of New Jersey, which is always a key recruiting territory for Penn State and other Big Ten programs. 247Sports and Rivals each rate him as a top 100 player overall in the country in the Class of 2025.

Penn State attacked the offensive line in a big way in the Class of 2023 with commits from J’ven Williams and Alex Birchmeier. One of the first commits in the Class of 2024 is also an offensive lineman, Cooper Cousins from Erie. Birchmeier was also the first commit on the board for Penn State in the Class of 2023 as it is maybe becoming a tradition for Penn State’s first commit in a recruiting cycle to be an offensive lineman.
