Longmont woman accused of attempting to kill child

Sep. 30—A Longmont woman has been arrested after police say she attempted to strangle a child to death.

Sienna Staigers-Barnes, 26, was arrested early Friday on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder after deliberation and first-degree attempted murder of a child under 12 by one in a position of trust.

Officials have not disclosed the age of the child or his exact relationship to Staigers-Barnes.

The child has been airlifted to Children's Hospital in Denver with life-threatening injuries.

According to an affidavit, Staigers-Barnes called 911 at 5:47 p.m. Thursday saying she had killed a child.

When police responded to the address, they found one other person on site who thought the child was upstairs. When police found the child, he was unresponsive and struggling to breathe.

Police noted bruises and scratches on the child, and a doctor said marks on his neck and burst vessels in his eyes indicated he had been strangled.

When police found Staigers-Barnes at a nearby park, she said "we" did not want to be on the planet anymore and that she decided to "humanely" kill the child.

Staigers-Barnes is set for a formal filing of charges on Oct. 5 and is being held on $250,000 bond.

According to court records, Staigers-Barnes has a prior arrest for theft and obstruction in a case that was dismissed after a deferred sentence.
